While in law school Sean had the distinct honor to serve as a law clerk with the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, serving for the Honorable Thomas M. Rose. In this position, Sean researched and assisted the federal judge to resolve pending cases before the Court and drafted multiple opinions and decisions of the Court. Notably, Sean assisted in drafting an opinion dismissing a cruel and unusual punishment case levied against the Greene County Sheriff’s Office. Sean was also fortunate to clerk with the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio. In this position, Sean assisted in the preparation and prosecution of federal criminal cases. From these experiences was born Sean’s love and respect for the courtroom. Sean believes the courtroom is sacred and believes a strong county prosecutor is a cornerstone of a successful democracy.
After his graduation from the University of Dayton School of Law, Sean accepted employment in the private practice of law with Peelle Law Offices in Wilmington, Ohio. During his tenure with Peelle Law Offices, Sean was introduced to many areas of the civil practice of law, assisting clients in civil litigation, estate and business planning, and transactional matters. Sean left Peelle Law Offices on good terms to pursue his passion for the courtroom and accept a position as an Assistant Prosecuting attorney in Fayette County, Ohio where he and his family resided at the time.
While in Fayette County, Sean assisted the prosecution of juvenile delinquencies, abuse, neglect, and dependency cases, and adult felonies, ultimately ascending to the position of Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney. As Chief Assistant, Sean was responsible for the prosecution of adult felony cases, civil matters, and working with the County Commissioners and Township Trustees. Sean has prosecuted numerous jury trials and adjudicatory hearings, securing convictions for matters ranging from drug trafficking, breaking and entering, aggravated robbery, and sexual assault. He believes in a proactive approach to preventative law enforcement. Notably, during his tenure as an assistant prosecutor, Sean presented to local schools on the consequences of engaging in risky behavior.
In July 2021, with both great sadness and joy, Sean resigned his position with the Fayette County Prosecutor so he and his family could return home to Hancock County when Katie accepted a position with Findlay City Schools. Sean currently practices law with Hackenberg, Feighner & Werth, LLC as a trial attorney. Sean’s core practice of law still revolves around the courtroom where he is most comfortable.
In raising two young children in this community, Sean has both a moral and civic duty to protect and keep Hancock County safe. In the fight to keep our community safe, Sean will do everything in his power to fight the opiate and methamphetamine addiction crisis. That begins with taking a tough, hardline, and no-nonsense approach to the prosecution of drug dealers and the peddlers of opiates and methamphetamine that fuel this crisis in our community. Sean will fight and be the voice for the victims of violent crimes and Sean will ensure that the violent criminals who are their abusers are investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Sean pledges to support law enforcement by building a strong prosecution team, designed to coordinate and build strong relationships with our men and women in uniform. Sean will establish an open line of communication with our Hancock County Law Enforcement Agencies. Our criminal prosecutors will be tough, competent, and prepared! Sean will utilize his extensive criminal trial advocacy skills and experience to protect our citizens and officers in the field. As our officers put themselves in harm’s way each and every day, they can be assured that they will have the full support of Sean’s office backing them up every step of the way.
I, Sean Abbott, pledge to support our county elected officials, township trustees, and all county departments to drive Hancock County into the future. We will ensure that our county officers will receive the advice and responsiveness they deserve.
